There were a few Food Network related cookbooks that were released today, with one being from Scott Conant (The Scarpetta Cookbook) and one by Anne Burrell (Own Your Kitchen: Recipes To Inspire & Empower).
Scott Conant plans to do several events to celebrate his book signing. The first event is at Scarpetta Los Angeles on October 22nd that is a $110 4-course menu inspired by the cookbook and includes dinner and an autographed book. The second event is at Scarpetta Las Vegas on October 24th that is a $150 for a private cocktail party that includes an autographed book.
Anne Burrell is doing the standard book tour and has dates on both the East and West coasts. The dates and times for her book tour are below. You can also flip through her book on Amazon with the link above with the "Look Inside" feature.
In other cookbook news, the Paula Deen cookbook that was cancelled earlier this year was supposed to come out today. I guess the 609,000 Paula Deen supporters on Facebook will not be able to support her financially just yet.

So, Anne is totally ignoring the DC area. Figures.
ReplyDeleteOMG, Anne Burrell! Okay, how's this for Food Network "gossip"?
ReplyDeleteI literally just read about Anne in a book titled "PX Me" -- that was written by the wife of Anne's former boss (the person who owned the restaurant that was shown in Anne's first solo FN show, "Secrets of a Restaurant Chef").
http://abbe-diaz.com/books/ (PX Me, Chapters 8, 9, and 10)
And from what I gather, Anne is a pretty horrible person who mis-treated staff underlings (and was sued for it), had no respect for restaurant patrons, and undermined the restaurateur that gave her the ONLY job she has ever held as an actual restaurant Executive Chef.
As a longtime restaurant worker myself, I can tell you that Anne Burrell is NOT considered a reputable chef within the NYC fine-dining industry. She did not "leave" her job (as her Wikipedia page reports), she was deservedly FIRED for insubordination not long after two waitresses sued her for sexual harassment.
Gotta admit though, her exploits makes for some really entertaining and hilarious reading.
[**Full disclosure: Although I will be compensated for this comment, it is comprised of my own words and true sentiment. Sponsored by PX This and PX Me**]
And as a grammar hammer, I take it that Scott and Anne are not releasing Paula?
ReplyDeleteDoesn't she seem like a bitch? No big surprise
ReplyDeleteMy copy of Scott's book arrives by Friday. Can't wait!
ReplyDeleteI'd like to read both of these books but all I can find are Kindle editions so I guess I'm old-fashioned and out of luck.
ReplyDeleteWell, that's interesting. There's something off-putting about her; something not quite honest or real. Please tell me that there's no Scott Conant gossip in that book because I just ordered his Scarpetta Cookbook.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you think so!
ReplyDeleteHa, no, there's no Scott Conant gossip in the book. Personally, I am not a fan, but please don't let that cloud your pasta-making joy.
Thanks - that's a relief! Are you not a fan of the man or his cooking? He has given me such an appreciation for Italian cooking and how pure and incredibly delicious it can be. :)
ReplyDeleteIn all fairness, my distaste for him comes mostly from second-hand info; a buddy of mine worked with him and said he was jerk. But kitchens tend to be stressful places.
ReplyDeleteAte at Scarpetta once when it first opened, and it was awful. So bad that the waiter noticed I barely touched my pasta plate and took it off the check, which was nice. Conant also had another short-lived resto in the Cooper Square hotel (can't even remember the name of it now), and it was fantastic! Then the waiter said Conant was off all weekend (having a baby) so I realized he wasn't personally responsible for the food that night.
Went back to that place about a couple weeks later, and almost everything was terrible. So I guess that's why I'm not a fan. These chefs with their multiple places when they can't even control the quality in ONE place, are just greedy and egomaniacal. If the food is awful when the Exec or chef de cuisine isn't around, then they aren't hiring, training or nurturing their staff properly. They're just greedy.
I'm sorry to hear this. Maybe things have improved now. He certainly seems to have a healthy ego, but I'm never offended by that if someone can back it up with talent. When greed takes over, people lose sight of their original goal and the product suffers. I hope that's not the case and that it all balances out in the end. I've never been to Scarpetta, but it's on my bucket list. :)
ReplyDeleteScott's book is magnificent. I got my copy today and it's exquisite. I'm going to cook my way through it.
