Cutthroat Kitchen Premieres Tonight

Alton Brown Cutthroat Kitchen

Just a reminder that Cutthroat Kitchen premieres tonight after the Food Network Star finale.  I am sure you have seen the ads on the Food Network or from previous posts on this site.

Alton Brown hosts, and the show description states:
"In each episode, four chefs are greeted by Alton with a briefcase filled with $100,000 in cold hard cash and each contestant receives $25,000 to spend wisely over the course of the game on auction items to help themselves or sabotage their competitors.  After each cooking challenge is given, chefs have sixty seconds to gather ingredients in the pantry and then regroup for an auction to bid on culinary curveballs such as the exclusive use of salt or not allowing their opponents to taste their dishes.  A chef will be eliminated after each of the three rounds, and the last competitor to survive wins the money they have left in their bank."

A few more details and news about the show:

  • Alton Brown said that a lot of the time the best chef does not win as they think they are good enough to cook their way through all of the sabotage.
  • The judges on the show do not know what transpires before they judge the food.  So, they are blindly tasting food without knowing what went on with the auctions.
  • You may have noticed on the trailers of the show that Penny Davidi will be appearing on the show.  Penny was the villain on season 7 of Food Network Star, and I think she is scheduled to appear on the 2nd episode on August 18th.
  • There are supposed to be videos on the Food Network site after each episode of Alton and the judges talking about the dishes prepared on the show.

Let me know what you think of the show after it airs, and if you think you will continue watching.

  1. I seriously can't wait for this. Whatever does or doesn't happen during the competition, Alton Brown as treacherous provocateur is just too good to resist.

I recognized one other competitor from the ad. I don't remember his real name (he calls himself "the bull"), but he competed on Top Chef and Chef Wanted (and lost both). I'm already rooting against him, because he was an obnoxious jerk on both of those shows. AND he was dumb enough to use canned chilies while competing for a job at a high-level Mexican restaurant.

  2. I seriously can't believe this crap got green-lighted. Alton Brown will burn in Hell for this one.

  3. I saw him use the can of chilies! I thought your not in, your out! There is a woman on this show to who was on I think on NFNS. the black long hair lady. she is so grating.

  4. This show is fairly mean-spirited hence the title. A lot of smack flying in the show too.

  5. You're absolutely right. That was Penny Davidi, possibly the most annoying NFNS contestant ever.

  6. Honestly wasn't my cup of tea.

  7. I thought this was pretty amusing, especially the little public service text at the bottom of the screen so none of you kids would get crazy and start using your food processor blade as a kitchen knife.

  8. She redeemed herself somewhat when she was on "Chopped."

  9. Beats the fuck out of the Shed, Food Court Wars, and endless reruns of DDD

  10. I expected competitiveness, but not quite this level of mean-spiritedness I'm sure that they were egged on, but still. They were all so catty towards each others that it made me not want to root for any of them. I'm not sure I'll be watching again next week. Alton didn't help things, he seemed to egg on the nastier aspects of the show.

  11. Loved it! It was fun seeing Alton being all devious and enjoying it. Bidding on items of sabotage is a pretty darn creative spin. It's sort of like a mini Top Chef on steroids. Nice to see FN lightening up a bit and letting their hair down. Can't wait to see next week's show.

  12. I love Alton, but the show is HORRIBLE. Alton was so tough on the Food network stars on choosing a theme for their show, how could he think this was a good idea? This is Chopped with sabotage. So in the end the most underhanded wins? I turned the channel half way through the show. I could not care less who won. Sorry Alton.

  13. That's Frankie Terzoli. I think he was unfairly eliminated in TC—in fact, should have won the Quickfire and immunity—so I was rather happy to see him win for a change.

  14. No she didn't. She was a bigger, more delusional beyotch on Chopped All Stars and actually believed Michael Symon and Marcus Samuelsson were threatened by her and that Amanda Freitag didn't know anything about using saffron.

  15. Mine either. Most of us are taught to play fair as children and trash talking and sabotage just goes against the grain. Mine anyway. Also, I absolutely loathe Alton with facial hair. He just looks dirty.

  16. Ugh. I recorded it but based on the comments I'm not sure I'll watch it. I like Alton, but I don't like nastiness for its own sake.

  17. It's worth a watch once, but just not my cuppa!

  18. I liked Food Court Wars better than this show, but I agree that it is WAY better than The Shed and all the DDD reruns.

  19. I am addicted to Food Network, so I gave it a shot. I just didn't like it. Like others have said, I didn't appreciate the mean spirited nature of the competition. I also have to admit that I haven't been overly fond of Alton Brown since the second half of last season's Food Network Star. He seems more arrogant nowadays.

  20. Watched it once, won't bother with it again. Almost seems like they're competing to see who can win the least amount of money (by spending what they have to sabotage their opponents.) I kinda liked "Scruffy Alton"... and I agree with the person who said this show beats endless reruns of DDD... but not worth a second run for me.

  21. Not sure which is a bigger turn-off- scruffy Alton or scruffy Ted when he was on ICA a little while back.

  22. There are enough competitions in which contestants attempt to strategize—usually to their own ultimate disadvantage—without building a whole show around the concept.

  23. And that's about the best that you can say for it.

  24. Half way through the show I had to dive for the barf bag and the remote to excise the gut wrenching wave that overtook me. Shame on Alton for manufacturing one more easily forgettable show. Ranks right up there with "Honey Boo Barf" to me.

  25. Even though,he's not part of it, SO FRUSTRATED WITH THE GUY NETWORK AND silly shows

  26. is it just me...or is FN bombing out all the way around nowadays??? i'm just so disgusted with all the 'competitive' shows....they seem to be getting worse and worse...and then they come up with 'the Shed'??? and endless reruns of DDD??? i miss Mario...and Emeril...i remember when Bobby Flay kept saying 'it's all about the food'....i don't see that anymore....

  27. Ugh, I just realized that "Chef Frankie" on the debut episode was that goon, Frank Terzoli from the worst season of Top Chef (season two).

  28. I can't stand this show and I think it's a huge step in the wrong direction for Food Network and Alton Brown. I watched the premiere and will never watch again.

  29. No sign of Penny last night and doesn't look like she's on next week either.

  30. Alton Brown turns in the Jerry Springer of the kitchen - without all the "charm". This show is mean spirited, harsh and very uncomfortable to watch. Lovable Alton from Good Eats he has grown nasty, bitter and arrogant. His cruel streak and evil look is not even remotely appealing. Hope this show dies a quick and sudden death.

  31. Have to disagree. I love The Shed.

  32. Throw in scruffy Tyler Florence as well. Grow it or shave it, guys.

  33. This is like Hunger Games meets the Food Network. I watched once and will never watch again. I grew up watching my dad, a chef, concoct wonderful creations and fond memories. I never thought I would ever hate a cooking show. I do now.

  34. So far, this show has included nothing but mediocre chefs who would probably make mediocre dishes at best, even without the sabotage. The first show had this lame-brain on it who couldn't even touch a live lobster because it disgusted her. Seriously? How about we focus on who's the better cook instead of the most devious?

  35. I just spent an hour watching this sorry excuse of a cooking competition where trained chefs use their off kitchen skills to win some cash. Wow where is the cooking Food Network! I mean I thought i was watching FOOD NETWORK. Geez you must be out of ideas. Here is one why don't you auction off a samurai sword at least that way we can see some real action.
