Food Network's August 2013 Programming Highlights

Cutthroat Kitchen Food NetworkThe Food Network has put out a press release detailing the programming in August on the channel, which includes a lot of new and returning series.  Some of the highlights include:

  • The season finale of Food Network Star on August 11th, where a winner is crowned.
  • The series premiere of The Shed on Monday, August 5th at 10pm.  There will be 6 episodes of this series, and it seems to be Food Network's attempt at 'Redneck Programming' which has been successful on other channels like Duck Dynasty, Swamp People, Honey Boo Boo, etc.
  • The series premiere of Bubba-Q on Monday, August 19th at 10:30pm, which is like American Chopper, but instead of custom bikes, it is custom BBQ grills.

  • The series premiere of Alton Brown's Cutthroat Kitchen hosted by Alton Brown, which starts on Sunday, August 11th at 10pm after the Food Network Star finale.  Despite it being in its first season, the Food Network filmed 13 episodes, while they normally film 6 episodes in pilot seasons.  So, they must feel pretty confident about this show and I think it could be interesting.
  • The season 4 premiere of Great Food Truck Race on Sunday, August 18th at 9pm.
  • The season 3 premiere of Chef Wanted with Anne Burrell on Thursday, August 1st at 10pm.  Despite not having much success finding chefs in the past, they are back with another season.  I plan to have an update page of Chef Wanted episodes soon to show which winners accepted jobs and which didn't.
  • New nighttime episodes of Chopped, Mystery Diners, Iron Chef America, Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives and Restaurant Impossible
  • A Chopped After Hours Webisode where Ted Allen cooks for the first time in the Chopped Kitchen.
  • New daytime episodes of Pioneer Woman, Barefoot Contessa, Bobby Flays Barbeque Addiction, Home for Dinner with Jamie Deen, Giada at Home, and Trisha's Southern Kitchen.

Is there any thing here you are looking forward to?

Another fresh barbecue face joins the Food Network Primetime lineup in new series Bubba-Q premiering Monday, August 19th at 10:30pm.

No grill is too outrageous for Bubba and his crew, and this series follows his journey and highlights his unprecedented grill creations. Competition heats up on new series Cutthroat Kitchen hosted by Alton Brown on Sunday, August 11th at 10pm, as four chefs are given $25,000 to spend on either helping themselves or sabotaging their competitors. As Alton monitors this chaos in the kitchen, the chefs will do anything to ensure they have the winning dish.

Food Network hits the road with season four premiere of The Great Food Truck Race on Sunday, August 18th at 9pm with eight food truck teams vying for their chance to win their own truck and $50,000. SERIES PREMIERES

The Shed - Premiering Monday, August 5th at 10pm

Food Network introduces the (unofficial) First Family of Mississippi and barbecue royalty in the new series The Shed. The six episode series chronicles the exploits of the Orrison clan, founders of The Shed, one of the most popular barbecue joints in Mississippi. The self-proclaimed "ShedHeds" have amassed hundreds of awards and something of a cult following. Follow the Orrisons and their ever-growing business empire on their outlandish and unexpected adventures - nothing is too wild for the ShedHeds and their colorful cast of characters. Customers come out of the woodwork for The Shed's famous barbecue and co-owners and siblings Brad and Brooke, along with their mother, Mama Shed, and father, Daddy-O, who all have their hands full throughout the series. From catering barbecue feasts and bayou weddings to Brad and Brooke's playful sibling rivalry and barbecue competitions with the whole gang, it's never a dull moment at The Shed. Experience a full summer rush, ShedHed style!

Premiering Monday, August 5th at 10pm- "Marketing Geniuses"

When Mama Shed's misfired marketing idea leads to an unplanned ribs giveaway, Brad decides he can do a better job. Brooke disagrees, and challenges Brad and Daddy-O to the first-ever guys vs. girls Shed marketing contest. The girls struggle to create a Shed calendar (which puts Hazel in a very sticky situation), while the guys invent the one and only "Pig-a-Pult" to launch sandwiches into the sky. Not to be outdone, The Shed Pimps come up with their own marketing scheme, which, conveniently for them, revolves around setting up a kissing booth they promote on social media.

Premiering Monday, August 12th at 10pm- "Welcome to the Shed"

The wild summer rush is in full swing at Mississippi's hottest barbecue restaurant, so it's up to Brad, Brooke, and Mama Shed to hire new help, and fast. The job interviews are as unique as The Shed itself, including on-stage auditions, a trip to the legendary Shed "junkyard", and a visit with the one-and-only Shed Pimps. Meanwhile, a hungry alligator has crept out of the bayou and into The Shed Garden farm, so it's up to Daddy-O, Big Hoss, and Coal Miner to lure the critter away from their tomatoes.

Cutthroat Kitchen- Premiering Sunday, August 11th at 10pm

Cooking skills aren't enough to win in Food Network's Cutthroat Kitchen - in this new competition series, chefs must also be crafty, clever and willing to sabotage their opponents. Led by Alton Brown as the kitchen's cunning provocateur, this game features four competitors, three rounds of cooking and auctions where chefs bid on items to help themselves or hinder their opponents. In each episode, four chefs are greeted by Alton with a briefcase filled with $100,000 in cold hard cash and each contestant receives $25,000 to spend wisely over the course of the game on auction items to help themselves or sabotage their competitors. After each cooking challenge is given, chefs have sixty seconds to gather ingredients in the pantry and then regroup for an auction to bid on culinary curveballs, such as the exclusive use of salt or not allowing their opponents to taste their dishes. A chef will be eliminated after each of the three rounds, and the last competitor to survive wins the money they have left in their bank.

After the show, viewers can visit FoodNetwork.com/CK to watch Alton and each episode's judge revisit the chefs' biggest missteps and most surprising triumphs.

Bubba-Q - Premiering Monday, August 19th at 10:30pm

Bubba is a Texas-born, Texas-raised good ol' boy who lives and breathes Texas barbecue, but for now, you won't find this grill master in the Lone Star State! Bubba and his family have taken Philadelphia by storm, wowing them with their over-the-top custom grill designs. There is no job too big and no idea too outrageous for Bubba and his crew, as the most unexpected items are masterfully transformed into jaw-dropping, fully-functioning grills.

SEASON PREMIERES

The Great Food Truck Race - Premiering Sunday, August 18th at 9pm

Premiering Sunday, August 18th at 9pm - "I Left My Food Cart in San Francisco" - SEASON PREMIERE!

Season four starts in Los Angeles under the Hollywood sign where host Tyler Florence greets the eight teams fighting for their chance to win the grand prize of $50,000 and their own food truck. For the first challenge, the teams must go high class, selling one signature dish in Beverly Hills, but that dish must be sold for at least $20 a pop. The second challenge sends the teams 380 miles north to San Francisco, where they can only sell a new and different signature dish. The team to sell the least amount with their two signature dishes is sent home.

Premiering Sunday, August 25th at 9pm- "A Strange Brew in Portland"

The seven remaining teams head to Portland, Ore., where they're challenged to make the most with what they've got. In their first SPEED Bump, they have to go the entire day without restocking their supplies. On day two, they're given a local ingredient called geoduck, which must be the main ingredient in all menu items. After selling $200 with their geoduck menus, the teams race to a scenic vista for a chance to win a reward that might be enough to save them from this week's elimination.

For even more Food Trucks, viewers can visit FoodNetwork.com/FoodTrucks for photo galleries, blogs and video clips. Plus a new "On the Road" section with Tyler Florence's favorite restaurants around the country and a guide to Food Network stars' favorite food trucks

The chefs are tasked with creating a bold vegetarian dish fitting with Abigaile's menu and recreating a fast food guilty pleasure into a restaurant-worthy dish. During dinner service, one chef struggles to balance the restaurant's needs with his ego, while the other struggles with the overwhelming service. Only one will be left standing as the new Chef of this famed brewery.

Premiering Thursday, August 22nd at 10pm - "A Countryside Tavern"

Italian restaurateur Tony and his son Tonino seek a new Executive Chef to transform their Connecticut restaurant, Tavern 1757, into a rustic Italian hotspot. Anne Burrell tests four chefs on their ability to create Sardinian-inspired dishes as well as incorporate rustic meats such as rabbit and wild boar. During dinner service, one chef struggles to keep their timidity from sabotaging their chances at this dream opportunity, while the other struggles to maintain quality control of the food going out to the customers. It's a big job for a big restaurant, and only one walks away with the title of Executive Chef.

Based on the presentations, Bob and Susie green light three concepts, and the finalists create their pilots - to be directed by season two Food Network Star winner Guy Fieri. After the episode airs, viewers will be able to vote online and via phone to determine who wins the ultimate prize at next week's finale.

Premiering Sunday, August 11th at 9pm - "America Picks A Star"

  1. I'm looking forward to Cutthroat Kitchen and The Shed. I really liked Brad Orrison when he competed on Best in Smoke two years ago.

  2. Every single thing on the Aug 31 episode of Barefoot Contessa has already been made on one of her shows except maybe the grilled corn on the cob. Lazy much? I don't see how that qualifies as a new episode. I predict a lot of "let me show you how I make it" with voiceovers from the original footage. Disgraceful.

  3. Still no sign of Justin's show... Also why isn't Jeff's morning show not going to be on air??

    ReplyDelete
  4. They haven't filmed any more of Justin's show, so no time soon on that. This list is not all inclusive, just the 'highlights', so Sandwich King will still be on.

  5. Man, I miss the days when Alton Brown was a geek and wasn't afraid to look and act like it. Now he's just a game show host. His knowledge of food is almost incidental.

I am looking forward to Food Truck Race; that's been one of the network's better ideas of the past few years, and I was afraid they'd shelved it due to costs. (It can't be a cheap show to film.)

I have zero interest in The Shed or any other straight reality shows like that.

  6. I stand by my MTV/MTV2 theory about Food Network/Cooking Channel. Food Network is going to continue being more about people who cook food than actual food and before you know it all that will be on air are reality shows and reruns of movies like No Reservations and Julie and Julia.

  7. The Cooking Channel is starting to go the reality route too, and a few months back said that was their strategy. Here is a good read to prove that: http://realscreen.com/2013/06/07/rsw-13-cooking-channel-looking-for-reality-docusoaps/ I never did a story on it, but its worth a read

  8. Hey Matt -- Did you see "Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives" was nominated for an Emmy for best reality show? Guy Fieri is not listed as a producer, as he was for that special that won a Daytime Emmy last month. Has FN ever had a Primetime Emmy nominee before? Here's the link: http://www.emmys.com/shows/diners-drive-ins-and-dives

  9. Yeah, I did see that when the nominations came out. I am not sure if the FN ever had a Primetime Emmy nominee before, but it doesn't look like it.

  10. I seriously agree with your comment about AB. Give us more 'Good Eats'!

    ReplyDelete
  11. We need more shows like Good Eats, shows that really teach us something while keeping us entertained.

  12. The programming highlights are to inform about new episodes. Sandwich King's new season doesn't start until October.

  13. Please don't let this happen!

  14. I'm not exactly "looking forward" to Cutthroat Kitchen but I'll probably at least give it a try. I'm not too worried about new episodes of Chopped... FN does so many reruns that they all start to run together in my mind anyway.
